Leaving Babies/Children In Cars

Listening to the radio last week, a lady rang in saying she saw a young baby left in a car unattended in a shopping centre, the baby was distressed and crying. She stayed by the car. A "good samaritan" was able to get the baby out of the car, police were called, eventually the parents were located. The baby is 3 months old. When they were asked how long had the baby been left in the car, they replied only about an hour. According to the caller, the parents didn't seem bothered.

How can parents be so irresponsible?

It can take as little as 15 minutes in an overheated car for a child to suffer life-threatening brain or kidney injuries.

When body temperature reaches 40°C (104°F) internal organs shut down. At 41.6° (107°F), children die.

Today I'm shocked to read "Paramedics have been called to 19 cases of children being locked in cars in the past two days." We have temperatures of 43° (110 F) and idiots still leave their children in cars.

"Ambulance Victoria's plea for parents to stop leaving children in cars alone is one of several health warnings as Victoria prepares to swelter through another 40-plus degree day.

AV spokesman Paul Bentley told Ross and John there were case eight cases during yesterday's 43 degree heat and 11 on Monday"

""Some days there are more deliberate acts, like on Monday (when a father) left four children in the car when he went in the bottle shop," he said."

""There are others where mum and dad are quickly getting the children in car, leave the keys on the front seat ... and accidentally lock the child in the car."

What is wrong with these people? Somebody should lock these adults in cars in 43 degree heat and see how they like it, maybe then they wouldn't do it.

First Birthday

This little poppet turned one on Saturday. Here she is with her two year old cousin enjoying birthday cake.

Oopsy daisies, I made a boo-boo. Her cousin is not her cousin - he's her uncle!

Another Year Older

Always will I remember the words on a birthday card sent to me from Nana. I think I was around ten or so. It went -
Another year older
Well maybe that's true,
But another year nicer
Sounds a lot more like you.

And Mum making a comment about me not behaving myself and Nana hoped I would be better behaved the coming year! Funny what we remember isn't it? That card had beautiful girls (I thought them grown-up ladies) dressed in a crinoline with a matching parasol and the one on the front of the card had this most beautiful shade of blue. With little pink rosebuds and ribbons. There was one in green and I think another one - you saw them as you opened the card.

Well I'm a year older since yesterday, can't say that I've learnt an awful lot over the past 12 months. Do we really learn" I've often wondered about that - how can we learn from our mistakes when we keep on making them. Or perhaps we make them with more style and flair insted of gauche and clumsy?

So we had a good time yesterdy, an apple upside cake was made, the candles were lit and served with that expensive cream - you know the one I mean, the one that tastes delicious which we don't buy very often because
a) It'a too expensive, and
b) It has 48% fat!

But ohh... it sure does taste yumnmy!

New Years Day - Boring Children

Happy New Year to all the Bloggers everywhere. D'you know something? Last night was the first NYE for many years that I was actually going to go and see the fireworks.

Son down from Sidders and his gf (lovely girl btw) and I were going to go - anyway the cool change came and it was bloody pouring - thunder and lightning, sounded like the heavens had opened.

Honestly, it was raining cats and dogs, ergo we couldn't go and see all the pretty fire crackers. The gf said they probably wouldn't start - they'd all get wet you see and that'd put 'em out.

Heard 'em, but couldn't see 'em. Not to worry - had a very nice 2005 Barossa champers in the fridge plus a half bottle of Charders from the Peninsula just in case they didn't want a drink.

Come midnight, asked son to open the champs. I'd forgotten he had to drive his gf home - so he couldn't drink. (He's on his P's). Disappointing for me really, But oh well, made do wtih some Lindt - that and working on my blogs.

Rang Mum - we sang Auld Lang Syne together

then rang eldest son (also in Sidders) - no answer.

Rang daughter, she was asleep,

rang next son, he was groggy and asleep,

rang youngest son - he said he's brushing his teeth and off to bed

Rang my gd - couldn't hear a thing, she was at Crown or somewhere. She rang back later when it was a little quieter about 1.10am it was.

As my son (The Banker) said, "We're boring aren't we?" You can say that again - I reckon I must be the only parent who has boring grown-up kiddies who go to bed on New Years Eve long before the clock strikes 12! Shouldn't it be the other way around? (Sigh) A very big one!☺ (Sigh that is)

Today I'm goin' shoppin'!

Christmas - Aussie Style

Christmas Downunder

A few shots of an Aussie Christmas - outside under the sun. Just as well it wasn't over 30º - the trees (what there is) are in the wrong place!

There were so many of us (19 - one was absent due to illness) that my daughter had the bright idea of bringing all the Chrissie pressies outside and opening them there. This of course was met with some opposition (who else but by one of the "blokes"), however, we won that one, so out they all came. And an excellent idea it was too.

I mean honestly, can you imagine two prams, three toddlers, a high chair and numerous adults all trying to squeeze into my lounge room? Pfft! Outside was much better.

Work Christmas Party

MY work put on our Family Christmas Picnic last week - free food, free drink (non-alcoholic alas), icecream, rides and a present from Father Christmas for the kiddies. Yes, the "Man in the red suit" is always a popular figure at this time of year. Why, he's even known to have been "mobbed"!

Now, in countries on the other side of the world, wearing a nice thick velvet suit complete with fur - fake or otherwise - might be a nice, warm thing for those gents who work with their elves, in shops, along the street, and have the little dears sitting on their knees while they listen to the hastily whispered, "I want a.....". And a happy, smiling, jolly chap listens attentively and nods his head, and at the end of a four hour shift (or however long it is) goes home, puts his feet in front of the fire, sips a warm toddy and toddles off to bed, snug under his electric blanket.
Sounds nice eh?

Well, spare a thought for those who don't live "on the other side of the world" - Terra Australis. (To you of course, it is the other side of the world, but not for us) Yes, Terra Australis - here in Australia it is summer, and all those nice, jolly gents who wear the 'nice thick velvet suit complete with fur - fake or otherwise -' swelter, as they discreetly dab the sweat that runs down their faces. Doing this when it's 40º is no picnic. OH, 40º is 40ºC - that's 104ºF.

And so...I take my hat off to them - they do a wonderful job and make little people very happy.

Baby's First Christmas

This little bub didn't even cry, although she wasn't too sure who he was. But she did like the colour red.

The Farmyard

There were farm animals which amused the kiddies and even many adults had to be dragged away.

Having Fun

Everybody loves a picnic and when it's free, it's even better. The weather turned out to be quite nice - not as hot as last year's one which was a relief for many.

The Drinks King

Meet our king of the drinks. Take a bow.

Master Carver

And here - meet the master carver. He did a wonderful job.

The Queue

Have you ever noticed which is the l.o.n.g.e.s.t queue? It's always for the ice-cream.

A Birthday

Master Five
How many of you remember the children's version of Happy Birthday? You know, the one that goes -
Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday to you
You look like a monkey
And you smell like one too!

And of course somebody just had to remember it and sing it - caused a few raised eyebrows I can tell you. Honestly, some people have no sense of humour.
